Los Angeles Lakers: Ranking Magic Johnson’s best 2017 offseason moves
Success in the Draft Lottery and drafting Lonzo Ball
These two go together because one wouldn’t have been possible without the other.
Now you’re probably saying, “well the Lottery was all luck.” You’re right in that regard, and I agree that Magic had little to do with that outcome. Instead, it was a prime example of the confidence and swagger that he brings to this franchise that won me over.
More specifically, Magic apparently confirmed to head coach Luke Walton that the Lakers would be keeping their first-round pick in 2018, via CBS Sports: “Magic has already assured me that we’re going to get our top-three pick this year so I’m excited about that.” Some believe there was some shady stuff going on here, but I’m going to guess that wasn’t the case.
Instead, I’m going to take it as a strong leader instilling confidence in his team.
That confidence carried over into draft day, when Magic and the Lakers wasted no time making Lonzo Ball the new face of the franchise. They didn’t try to play it safe by drafting Jayson Tatum, or nervously trading up for Markelle Fultz. Nope — they sat comfortably at No. 2 and selected the local product who promises to take this team to new heights.
So essentially, Magic killed two birds with one stone. Show this team what it’s like to be led by a winner instead of an unqualified heir. Draft the next Laker legend who can kick-start the team’s return to relevance.

It’s been a busy past few months for Johnson since he took the reins in February. During that time, though, he’s done everything in his power to point this franchise in the right direction. Imagine the mark he’ll make on the Lakers and the NBA if he can pull off his grand scheme for next offseason.
