In what is being pegged lately as an uneventful offseason for the Washington Wizards, John Wall accepting a long-awaited four-year extension remains most important.

The Washington Wizards seemed to be getting nervous when John Wall did not immediately sign his offered contract extension.

As early as July 1, he was offered his supermax extension but seemed hesitant to bite. While rumors were still fresh of what stars might land where, Wall wanted to see action and not words.

Despite his public recruitment attempt of Paul George, that was shortly washed over by the re-signing of Otto Porter Jr. The Brooklyn Nets put an offer out for Porter, which the Wizards ultimately matched for their restricted free agent.

This appeared to be the move John Wall was counting on. Whether it was retaining Porter or bringing aboard more star power, he simply wanted to see his team put in the best position possible.

John Wall has a vision for Washington

Amid the month-long wait for him to sign the extension, Wall eventually put the good ink to paper.

According to USA TODAY’s Astasia Williams, John Wall made his stance public, and assured worried fans of his future outlook.

"“This is the only team I want to be with,” the All-NBA veteran said. “Everybody was panicking and wondering why I didn’t sign my extension. Y’all didn’t have to worry. This is the city I love being in and love playing here.”"

While Washington found a star player happy with their franchise’s direction, many others have left their team for a bigger contract or better opportunity. Last year it was Kevin Durant, now it’s Paul George and Chris Paul, just to name a couple.

Loyalty is a rare commodity in the NBA, and even Ted Leonsis recognizes this in John Wall for now and the foreseeable future.

"“My expectation is he will spend his career here, and when his career ends, he’ll be closely associated with this organization. He really wants his jersey retired. He really wants to play a role in the history of the organization, and he knows the way you really do that is to bring a championship to the franchise and the community.”"

Bringing home a championship to Washington is John Wall’s top priority, but not at the expense of chasing the team that may have the best chances year to year.

Considering the future

What Washington Wizards fans must recognize this season is the quality of the team’s offseason moves, not the quantity.

The roster very much looks the same with the exception of Mike Scott, Jodie Meeks and Tim Frazier as rotation players. It is important to understand the core of Wall, Bradley Beal and Otto Porter seems set in stone. All three are still showing an upside with plenty of room to improve, and will remain competitive — at worst — for the next four seasons.

However, they should not forget their youth campaign, as NBA Summer League showed everything but positive signs of real player development.

For those that can’t see this offseason used as an improvement tool for the Wizards, consider this:

  1. They have won over 40 games for four consecutive years.
  2. This past season reached their highest mark of wins since the late 1970s
  3. Marcin Gortat continues to improve in the late years of his career
  4. Kelly Oubre Jr. still has time to prove he can be more than just a rotation player in the future
  5. They are essentially a lock in a troubled Southeast Division.
