Sacramento Kings: 5 goals for Harry Giles’ rookie season
By Max Holm
3. Make 10-15 appearances for the Kings
The difficulty in starting to project Giles is the fact that he didn’t appear in NBA Summer League. Summer League is not exactly a precise, scientific approach to NBA projections, but it gives you an idea of where players currently stand. What can they do? What can’t they do?
Even without this knowledge, take one look at the Kings roster and you don’t feel like Giles will never earn some playing time. Randolph and the ever-improving Labissiere are the only true power forwards on the roster. Minutes are there if and when Giles is ready.
For Giles to earn playing time as a rookie, he’s going to have to embrace the role of an energy big. Developing his jump shot and perfecting his post moves can wait. Sure, some work can be put in there, but he shouldn’t step onto the court and try the moves he threw up at Duke.
A dependable power forward that can rebound the ball and play with energy defensively is still a valuable player. Given Sacramento lacks shooting in their frontcourt, spacing is going to be an issue. However, Dave Joerger did have success with two bigs in Memphis. If he can get a disciplined and energetic Giles, there’s no reason he can’t earn ample playing time.
