4. Low Usage Rate

One of the best things a role player can do is contribute to a team while maintaining a low usage rate. If a player is scoring, rebounding and playing defense while and their usage rate is low, it means they are an extremely efficient player.

Ironically, the best example of this is the player starting over Oubre, Otto Porter Jr. What Porter has been able to do with a low usage rate has been a miracle for the Washington Wizards, who clearly prefer to have the ball in the hands of their star guards.

Porter Jr.’s usage rate is 14.9 percent per game. Oubre Jr.’s is 14.7 percent. Both of those are incredibly low, but the difference is, Porter has managed to fine-tune his game to take advantage of the limited opportunity.

Otto Porter Jr. ranks 10th amongst active Washington Wizards players in usage rating, while Oubre is right behind him at 11th. Usage rating isn’t a measurement of how important a player is to a team or how much they contribute, it’s mainly a measurement of how often a player has a chance to make a play.

Kelly Oubre Jr.’s goal isn’t to increase his usage rate, but rather to keep it low, over maybe even get it lower but still find ways to contribute on both sides of the ball.
