Sacramento Kings: 5 goals for De’Aaron Fox’s rookie season
5. Attempt three three-pointers per game
The three-point shot is the name of the game in the modern NBA. The best offenses in the league — Golden State, Houston, Cleveland — are taking more and more three-pointers, and filling their rotations with players of all positions who can hit from outside.
Last season, eight point guards received votes for an All-NBA team: Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Stephen Curry, Isaiah Thomas, John Wall, Chris Paul, Kyrie Irving, and Damian Lillard. The fewest three-pointers attempted from the group was Wall’s 3.5 per game, and the other seven averaged 7.7 attempts.
Without taking the statement too far, to be a high-level starting point guard in the modern NBA you have to be a threat from three-point distance. Being able to make the shot is important, and something De’Aaron Fox will have to work on over the next few years. But even before his shot-making develops, Fox needs to increase his volume of shot attempts.
At Kentucky last season, Fox took 1.9 three-point shots per game, making just 24.6 percent of them. NBA teams that can completely sag off of a point guard completely gum up the pick-and-roll game. He will need to show he is not afraid to take a shot from behind the arc as a small step toward the goal he must reach — consistent three-point takes and makes.
