Darren Collison, PG

Previous Team: Sacramento Kings

2016-17 Statistics: 13.2 PPG, 4.6 APG, 2.2 RPG

This will be Darren Collison’s second stint with the Indiana Pacers, as he was previously with the club from 2010-12. Larry Bird obtained Collison in a deal for Troy Murphy, and Collison started 135 games for Indiana during his two previous seasons with the team.

The Pacers have a completely different roster than they did five years ago, but Darren Collison has once again been brought in to run the show in Indiana.

Collison has grown in two major ways since his earlier days as a Pacer: he is much more experienced and comfortable as a leader, and he is a better shooter than he was early in his NBA career.

Collison will be 30 years old when the team convenes for training camp, so he may not be a long-term solution at point guard. However, he should be able to provide stability to a young team that hopes to blossom together in the coming years.

Darren Collison is more of a scoring point guard, although his playmaking skills are solid. He is efficient in terms of keeping his turnovers low and shooting well from both two-point and three-point range.

Collison is quick, but lacks size so he is not a particularly good defensive player. Overall, however, this was a good signing for Indiana due to the two-year, $20 million deal that he agreed to (with only $2 million guaranteed in the second year).

Darren Collison is not only a reliable veteran player, but the Pacers have risked very little by offering him a reasonable, short-term deal. Considering the constraints that Kevin Pritchard has to work under, this was a nice move by Indiana’s new GM.
