Why the Minnesota Timberwolves need to trade for Kyrie Irving
With Kyrie Irving including the Minnesota Timberwolves on his list of teams he wishes to be moved to, there is no reason for Minnesota not to act fast. The T-Wolves have the assets to pull off the deal.
Kyrie Irving sent shockwaves through the NBA landscape when the news broke that he wishes to be traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Irving is reportedly looking to be the focal point of a team, and once again experience being a part of a team without LeBron James.
Minnesota Timberwolves team president and head coach Tom Thibodeau has been extremely active this offseason. Piecing together a trade for Irving would be the final step toward making Minnesota a legitimate title contender.
Per NBA.com, Andrew Wiggins used 10 percent of his possessions in isolation despite being ineffective with the play type. The recently added Jimmy Butler is on the same level as Karl-Anthony Towns as an iso-scorer. They both score just under 0.90 points per possession out of isolation. Thibodeau recently added Jeff Teague, who is a great playmaker and just finished in the 84th percentile in isolation scoring. But none of the aforementioned players are on the level of Irving.
Irving was one of five players to use at least five possessions per game out of isolation. Out of the five, he was tops with 1.12 points per possession (95th percentile). He would an entirely new to dimension to the Minnesota offense. Teague’s skill-set will make life easier for Towns, but Irving’s superiority as a three-point shooter would give Towns significantly more room to operate.
Bearing that in mind, here are a few reasons the Timberwolves should make the Cavaliers an offer for Kyrie Irving.
