Washington Wizards: 5 takeaways from 2017 NBA Summer League
By Randy Porga
1. Building talent for the future
While the Washington Wizards’ backcourt is in tip-top shape, the front office needs to still focus on the future. The most important issue to take away from this year’s Summer League is the lack of talent all around, but especially in the frontcourt.
Daniel Ochefu is at best projected to be an average player off the bench, and that’s if he continues to improve.
Kelly Oubre Jr. has a potentially promising future playing at the 4, which is good but not great. This year will prove where his potential and upside truly stands. Marcin Gortat is beating Father Time at his own game, but that can’t be expected for too much longer.
With that being said, off the bench the Wizards are left with Jason Smith, who is only getting older, and Ian Mahimi, who needs to prove himself just as Oubre Jr. does.
The Wizards’ front office needs to plan for the future and seek a solid center to come off the bench as Gortat heads toward the exit door in the coming years.
