Los Angeles Lakers: 3 free agent PGs team could still sign
Deron Williams
I’m a firm believer that Deron Williams is the underrated signing the Lakers need to make. Sure, he’s 33 years old and well past his prime. And yet, I believe he’d bring a terrific veteran presence for Los Angeles’ bench unit.
Furthermore, Williams would be an excellent mentor for Ball. As we all know, the veteran was once one of the best passing guards in the NBA. From 2007-13, he finished in the top five in assists every season. If it wasn’t for Steve Nash, he would have been the assists leader for at least a couple of campaigns.
Not only can Williams help the rising star develop as one of the NBA’s top passers, but he’d provide his own offensive flare off the bench. In 24 appearances with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, Williams averaged 7.5 points, 3.6 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game.
Is Williams still the guy who was shredding opposing defenses for the Utah Jazz all those years ago? Unfortunately not. However, even at his ripe age, it’s clear he can offer something as a backup point guard.

Williams played under a minimum deal with the Cavaliers in 2016-17. Although he’d probably cost more to play for a (likely) non-playoff team, it wouldn’t take the Lakers’ entire exception to get him under contract for 2017-18.
