Atlanta Hawks: 5 takeaways from 2017 NBA Summer League
1. John Collins is ready to contribute immediately
The Atlanta Hawks are the only team expecting their first round pick from the 2017 NBA Draft to immediately replace the production of an All-Star.
Atlanta let Paul Millsap sign a three-year, $90 million contract with the Nuggets without making an offer to the four-time All-Star less than two weeks after selecting John Collins with the 19th overall pick.
Tasked with the massive burden of taking over for Millsap, the Hawks’ leading scorer at 18.1 points per game, along with 7.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game, Collins was facing perhaps the most scrutiny of any player in Las Vegas.
Collins fulfilled the obligation by shooting 59.3 percent from the field as he averaged 15.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game in just 23 minutes per game.
Each time he stepped onto the floor, Collins found a way to capture the attention of everyone in attendance, as his athleticism took centerstage in Las Vegas.
Collins emerged as one of the most exciting players in the class of 2017, as his relentless attacks on the basket captivated the internet, making him a sensation.
