2017 NBA free agency tracker: Grades for every deal so far
Thabo Sefolosha: 2 years, $10.5 million (Utah Jazz)
The Utah Jazz were never going to replace Gordon Hayward in free agency, but by re-signing Joe Ingles and bringing in Thabo Sefolosha, they’ve at least battened down the hatches on the wing for what was the NBA’s third-ranked defense last season.
Sefolosha is remembered by more casual fans for never becoming the dependable 3-and-D weapon the Oklahoma City Thunder needed to win a championship (almost as if to set the table for Andre Roberson as their postseason weakest link down the road), but even at age 33, he’s one of the most reliable perimeter defenders in the NBA.
Last season with the Atlanta Hawks, Sefolosha averaged 7.2 points and 1.5 steals per game while shooting just 34.2 percent from downtown. He’s only a career 34.5 percent shooter from long range, but he shot above 40 percent in two of his last three seasons in OKC. He’s hardly an offensive threat, but for such a meager cost, this is an excellent depth signing for the Jazz.
