2017 NBA free agency tracker: Grades for every deal so far
Royce O’Neale: 3 years, $3.8 million (Utah Jazz)
With the signing of Royce O’Neale to a three-year contract (with the first being fully guaranteed), the Utah Jazz will have 16 players on non-two-way contracts for the upcoming season — one more than the limit of 15.
After going undrafted in 2015 out of Baylor, this 6’6″ wing played a season in Germany, joined the Golden State Warriors’ Summer League squad, played for a year in Spain and then suited up for the Utah Jazz’s Summer League team, averaging 4.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
Though he’s only 24 years old, O’Neale didn’t show enough in Summer League to warrant this kind of deal, even with Joel Bolomboy — whose future with the team is now seriously called into question — failing to stand out over the summer as well. Personally, I’d rather keep Bolomboy and let him develop.
