NEW YORK, NY – OCTOBER 31: Rajon Rondo /

Rajon Rondo, PG

As previously mentioned, the Lakers appear to be intent of finding themselves a solid veteran point guard who can add depth and give them a reliable, experienced option at the 1-spot.

That’s why it makes perfect sense that the Lakers have turned their attention to Rajon Rondo, formerly of the Chicago Bulls. According to ESPN‘s Ramona Shelburne, they’re considering making a run at the inconsistent, polarizing veteran point guard.

Rondo is coming off an up-and-down 2016-17 season, his first and only with the Bulls. Although he flashed the talent that made him a sensation in Boston, he stumbled for much of the year. Between his unreliable play and turmoil within the locker room, it was another step backward.

Still, he would be an intriguing addition for the Lakers. He could potentially take on a mentor role for Ball like he did in Chicago while serving as a solid veteran backup. Then, if the rookie trips, Ronda can step into a starting role without any significant hiccups.

My only concern is the money it would take to sign Rondo. The Bulls paid him $13.7 million a season ago, and were scheduled to pay him the same in 2017-18. Although I would guess his asking price has fallen since then, he still won’t come cheap. Then again, maybe the Lakers can do a one-year deal with a club option for 2018-19, which would give them some flexibility.

It’s anyone’s guess what a contract for Rondo would look like. The Lakers’ interest is noteworthy, but Johnson and Pelinka must tread carefully here. There’s a lot of bust potential with the 31-year-old point guard.
