Houston Rockets: 5 potential free agency targets in 2017
Patrick Patterson
If the Rockets aren’t able to execute a deal for Millsap, then another great option for depth at power forward for would be Patterson.
The former Rocket has developed into a good defender and three-point shooter, hitting greater than 36 percent from beyond the arc each of the past three seasons. Patterson has also had a positive defensive box plus-minus each of the past four seasons.
Patterson, like Millsap, is able to switch defensively, an important ability to have in today’s NBA. And with his improved shooting, Patterson won’t kill the spacing of the Rockets’ offense when on the floor. Patterson just recently turned 28, so he should have a couple more years at this level of play left in him.
Of course, the Toronto Raptors are still interested in re-signing Patterson, but most of that interest is tied to Serge Ibaka’s free agency status. The Raptors want to re-sign both Ibaka and Kyle Lowry, but if they do then they will be hard-pressed financially and will most likely let Patterson to walk.
If that’s the case, the Rockets present an opportunity to compete in the Western Conference, and can give Patterson a decent salary.
