Sacramento Kings: 5 potential free agency targets in 2017
2. Danilo Gallinari, SF/PF
2016-17 stats (with DEN): 63 GP, 18.2 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 2.1 APG, .6 SPG, .2 BPG, 1.3 TOV, 44.7 FG%, 38.9 3P%, 90.2 FT%
We know Danilo Gallinari will weigh all of his options equally in his impending free agency, judging by his recent comments that were translated through a report by E. Carchia of Sportando. That doesn’t necessarily mean Gallinari will ultimately go elsewhere, but the possibility is in play for another team to swoop in and attain him.
It’s certainly an ambitious idea to think that team would ultimately be the Kings, but there’s a few reasons why Gallinari would fit the bill for them.
Gallinari is a very reliable scoring threat, coming off one of the most efficient seasons of his career. He can create his own shot, knock down shots from three at a respectable rate and he gets to — and converts from — the free-throw line at a high rate.
While the timing of his jump in effectiveness may create some questions about whether he can reach that standard again, Gallinari has certainly timed it to his advantage as far as what he can earn this summer.
Of course, there’s a level of risk involved in signing a player with Gallinari’s injury history as he has lost a fair amount of his athleticism since returning to action after the complications he endured recovering from a torn ACL a few years ago. There’s also some concern to his fit as Gallinari logs more minutes acting as more of a stretch-4 than a true small forward at this point.
But if the Kings want to make a splash in free agency as recent rumblings have seemed to suggest they might, Gallinari may be the type of player they can reasonably go after. That is if a possible contender doesn’t sign him first.
