Miami Heat work out 4 more big men ahead of 2017 NBA Draft
By Frank Urbina
4. Harry Giles, PF/C, Duke
Prospect breakdown:
- Age: 19
- Height/Wingpsan/Weight: 6’11″, 7’3.25″, 222 pounds
- Freshman year averages:
- 3.9 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 0.3 ASP, 0.3 SPG, 0.7 BPG, 0.7 TOV, 57.7 FG%, N/A 3P%, 50.0 FT%, 11.5 MPG
- Draft Express Mock Position: 1st round, 20th overall pick
Strengths:
- Was once considered a top-five prospect prior to two ACL tears suffered in high school. Freakish measurements, solid frame for a power forward or a center. Agile, explosive, quick….before the injuries. Should be noted that, according to Draft Express, he appears to be regaining some of his pre-injury form.
Weaknesses:
- Well, the two ACL tears, for starters. Without his athleticism, his others flaws — like his lack of an offensive game outside of dunks — rendered him almost completely ineffective during his lone season at Duke. Feel for the game was never great, but missing so much time with knee injuries made it even worse. Averaged 7.7 fouls per 40 minutes.
Final verdict:
- Would Riley be bold enough to take a chance on a kid that was once a top-five talent, despite the injury history? Since the Heat’s staff will be getting an up-close look at Giles, they’ll be able to get a better idea of whether his explosiveness is coming back, and whether they think he’s an injury risk going forward or not. The workout in South Florida will be vitally important for Giles’ chances to go No. 14.Personally, I find his situation to be a bit too precarious. There will be other high-upside options available that haven’t torn both ACLs before reaching the age of 18.
