Washington Wizards: Otto Porter 2016-17 season review
By Liam Griffin
Otto Porter Jr. had a great season in 2016-17, so we take a closer look at how effective he was for the Washington Wizards.
The Washington Wizards had a great 2016-17 season, as John Wall and company recorded 49 wins — the team’s most since the 1978-79 season.
A large portion of the team’s success can be attributed to the outstanding backcourt duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal. However, the impact of Otto Porter Jr. shouldn’t be discounted. While he may not be as flashy as Wall or Beal, Porter played an important role on the Wizards’ roster this season.
Porter had a career year in 2016-17. He reached new heights in almost every traditional statistic. Most notably, Porter recorded career-highs in points (13.4 per game), rebounds (6.4 per game), steals (1.5 per game), field goal percentage (51.6 percent) and three-point percentage (43.4 percent).
Not only were Porter’s numbers outstanding in the scope of his career, but they placed him among the top of the league in multiple categories. He was a top-five three point shooter, but his fantastic season is most notable in the advanced statistical categories.
Otto Porter had the best turnover ratio in the league; as he lost the ball less than five percent of the time. His lack of turnovers, in tandem with his stupendous field goal percentage, made Otto Porter the highest-rated offensive player in the NBA.
Although the Wizards were carried by Beal and Wall, the play of Otto Porter should not be overlooked. It will be difficult for him to become a superstar on this team, but the numbers don’t lie. Porter’s play ranks him as one of the most efficient in the league on both sides of the ball, and his impact was definitely felt.
Can the Wizards keep him?
This offseason, Otto Porter will be a restricted free agent, so the Wizards will be able to match any offer made to him.
However, Wizards fans weren’t the only ones who noticed his increased production. Keith Smith of RealGM has reported that the Brooklyn Nets are planning to pursue him in free agency:
Since John Wall is eligible for a pricy contract extension this offseason, the Wizards will have decisions to make. How much are they willing to pay to retain their improving wing?

Even if the Wizards decide to let the sharpshooter leave Washington, Otto Porter Jr. still had a magnificent season, and his production aided the Wizards to their best season in almost 40 years.
