1. Dennis Smith Jr, PG, NC State

2017 statistics:  18.1 PPG, 6.2 APG, 4.6 RPG

Dennis Smith Jr. is the most offensively gifted point guard in the draft according to many scouts. His exciting, athletic dunks and playmaking ability will definitely continue to have fans at the edge of their seats, but can he remain consistent throughout a full regular season?

Smith earned ACC Freshman of the Year honors, contributing 18.1 points, 6.2 assists. 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game.

Coming off of a torn ACL in high school didn’t slow him down too much, but the North Carolina State Wolfpack struggled to a 15-17 record, missing postseason play completely. The poor team performance raised red flags as Smith noticeably had issues on defense against top teams defending the pick-and-roll.

The athleticism of Smith is hard to overlook though, and may be the key to his draft status overall according to Jonathan Givony of Draft Express.

"“His powerful frame, mixed with his explosive speed and leaping ability, created plenty of highlights in the ACC, and give him a tremendous framework to build off physically looking towards the NBA level.”"

Smith was given a ringing endorsement recently by NC State teammate Terry Henderson in an interview with the NY Post.

"“He’s going to be one of the great point guards in the league. Any team that passes him will pay for it later on. If he’s lower than 5, it’s somebody’s loss.’’"

It would be in New York’s best interest to select Smith if he’s still on the board simply because of the point guard need and the fact that he’d likely be the best player available. The leadership potential is there, but it’s critical to have a patient coaching staff guiding him the right way even if it’s through the infamous triangle.
