Marc Gasol and the Memphis Grizzlies are well on their way to making the playoffs for a franchise-record seven consecutive seasons. The 2013 Defensive Player of the Year himself is on pace for a third career All-NBA nod.
Though Gasol may not produce in the manner that most expect an elite big man to, he may be the best center in the NBA—and his team’s consistent success is a testament to that.
This past week, Gasol struggled mightily during a loss to the Atlanta Hawks. He bounced back against the Milwaukee Bucks by posting 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals, and accumulating a +/- of +13.
For good measure, Gasol torched the Chicago Bulls for 27 points, seven assists, six rebounds, one block, and three 3-point field goals made in a 98-91 victory.
If that weren’t enough, Gasol led Memphis to a 103-91 victory over the Atlanta Hawks with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Gasol’s offensive numbers are occasionally pedestrian, but he’s the embodiment of the term, “All-around player.” There isn’t an area of the game in which he can’t contribute, and his defensive versatility is criminally understated.
Gasol seems to cover every square inch of the half court when he’s defending, and without him, Memphis wouldn’t be the perennial force that it’s become.
