A number of gifted individuals are setting the NBA ablaze with all-time statistics, but it may be a more subtle contributor who’s leading the race for MVP.
The 2016-17 NBA regular season has been one of the most statistically alluring campaigns in league history. That may sound hyperbolic, but players are achieving statistical marks that most never expected to see again.
In the mist of a season of elite production from some of the biggest names in basketball, however, it’s a more subtle and stoic star who may be leading the race for MVP.
A player is averaging a triple-double for the first time since 1961-62 and another is producing at a rate that hasn’t been seen by any player since Tiny Archibald in the 1970s. Another is producing in a Michael Jordan-esque way.
For all of the incredible numbers that continue to be posted, however, an underrated superstar is reminding the Association of the understated nuances of the game.
The definition of one’s value is about more than just statistical production. It’s about helping one’s team achieve victory and, when the chips are down, being able to step up when games are on the line and timely contributions are needed.
The question is: who is the leader in the race for NBA MVP as the final month of the regular season nears?
Note:Â Kevin Durant and Kyle Lowry are excluded due to their current injuries.
