Sixers Free Agency Targets Revised Following Latest Revelation
By Simon Smith
Veteran Help
As much as the Sixers’ are in urgent need of consistent perimeter threats, they also are in need of some veteran presence who could contribute both on and off the court. The following players each have their own specialities that would help the Sixers tremendously.
Patty Mills, San Antonio Spurs
Age: 28
2016-17: 9.5 PPG, 3.3 APG, 41.2 3P%, 1.8 3PM, 21.6 MPG
Now in eighth season, Patty Mills would prove to be an excellent backup in the backcourt to assist with the early development of Simmons.
Mills’ relationship with head coach Brown from their time together with the Australian Olympic team could certainly be a huge factor in bringing Mills to Philadelphia.
As the Spurs don’t currently have a great level of flexibility within their salary cap, a lucrative offer to Mills could certainly see him switching teams this summer.
Taj Gibson, Oklahoma City Thunder
Age: 31
2016-17: 11.1 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 51.5 FG%, 26.8 MPG
Taj Gibson was recently traded to the Thunder during what was his eighth season in the Windy City. While Gibson has posted very solid numbers throughout his career, it’s been his value as a teammate that has set him apart and made him such a renowned figure for the Chicago Bulls.
As the president of basketball operations for the Bulls John Paxson said recently:
"“Taj has been one of the best people we’ve ever had in this organization.”"
Although now 31, Gibson has been quite durable throughout his career. As a backup to Embiid and Saric, Gibson would be an invaluable fit for the Sixers.

Joe Ingles, Utah Jazz
Age: 29
2016-17: 6.6 PPG, 2.3 APG, 44.1 3P%, 1.4 3PM, 22.5 MPG
Certainly not the flashiest or highest profile of this summer’s free-agent class, Joe Ingles‘ value lies in the intangibles. An extremely smart player, Ingles makes up for his lack of athleticism by understanding the game and being in the right place at the right time for the team.
And along with Mills, Ingles already has a relationship with coach Brown via the Australian Olympic team.
Marreese Speights, Los Angeles Clippers
Age: 29
2016-17: 9.3 PPG, 4.5RPG, 37.6 3P%, 1.3 3PM, 16.0 MPG
This would represent a coming home of sorts for Marreese Speights, who spent his first three seasons in Philadelphia after being selected 16th overall by the Sixers in the 2008 draft. The last few seasons has seen Speights carve a niche for himself as a stretch-big coming off the bench.
He started becoming noticed primarily through his role in contributing to the 2015 NBA champion Golden State Warriors.
Now with the Clippers, Speights has again made an impact in limited minutes. With improved conditioning this season and a reliable shot from mid-range and behind three, Speights’ playoff experience could prove a great learning tool for the young Sixers’ roster.
