Cleveland Cavaliers: 5 Takeaways From Media Day 2016-17
2. Mo Williams Has Officially Retired
It’s finally official.
Mo Williams has retired from the NBA. This comes a week after he said he would be back for one more year. It’s sad to see his 13-year career come to an end, but it was the right move.
While he would be a good coach in the league someday, his playing days were numbered. He has two bad knees, and the speed of the game has finally passed him by.
He had a good start to the season last year filling in for Kyrie Irving, but once he came back, he didn’t play at the same level, and Dellavedova became the permanent back up.
It could have been the grind of training camp or maybe family telling Williams to hang up his sneakers, but he will always be remembered as one of the most popular Cavaliers players along with Anderson Varejao.
Richard Jefferson even joked that he and Williams called each other’s bluff on retirement and he lost since he’s still with the team.
The question now is, what do the Cavaliers do for a backup point guard? According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, the Cavs have been in contact with Norris Cole, Mario Chalmers and Kirk Hinrich to be the replacement.
I’ve mentioned these three players as possibilities in the past. Cole was second, Chalmers was third and Hinrich was the last choice.
It is currently not known if the Cavaliers will quickly sign one of the veterans, or stay young with Jordan McRae and Kay Felder, but whichever they decide won’t ever compare to the impact Williams had on the team and the city.
