Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s Return

At the end of the 2014-15 season, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist‘s name was involved in the conversation when debating the league’s best defenders. Last season however, was a big ball of frustration for him.

After tearing his labrum in a preseason game, Kidd-Gilchrist made his return in February only to sustain the same injury just seven games in. In those games, his presence was felt, as he averaging 12.7 points and 6.4 rebounds.

Luckily, Marvin Williams had one of the best seasons of his 11-year career in place of the injured Kidd-Gilchrist. Williams averaged 11.7 points and 6.4 rebounds while splitting the defensive assignments with Nicolas Batum guarding the opposing team’s best wing player.

More from Hoops Habit

No one can replace Kidd-Gilchrist’s impact on defense. That’s why getting him back this season and ensuring he stay healthy will play a huge part in the team’s success. The worry is that he may sustain yet another injury to his shoulder.

It isn’t rare that you see Kidd-Gilchrist diving on the floor for a loose ball multiple times a game. That’s just what type of player he is.

He prides himself in doing the little things that may not show on the stat sheet, but every winning team needs. It’s unlikely that he will shy away from doing those things, but being smart and deciding when to take advantage of those type of hustle plays will be key.

Although it was a very small sample size, Kidd-Gilchrist showed the improvements in his offensive game that the Hornets have been waiting for. He connected on three of the seven triples (.429) he attempted and shot .541 percent from the field.

The loss of Lin and Lee will be felt without a doubt, but if Kidd-Gilchrist can manage to stay healthy throughout the season, it won’t be as big of a blow. In fact, Kidd-Gilchrist brings the defensive presence that neither Lee or Lin can amount to.

He will be the X-factor for this team.
