Golden State Warriors: 25 Best Players To Play For The Warriors
By Phil Watson
Tom Meschery closed out his collegiate career at Saint Mary’s averaging 20.8 points and 13.0 rebounds per game as a senior and put himself in the mix as a top professional prospect.
The Philadelphia Warriors selected Meschery with the seventh overall pick in the 1961 NBA Draft and plugged him into the power forward spot next to Wilt Chamberlain as a rookie.
In 1962, the Warriors moved to San Francisco, creating a homecoming for Meschery, who had played at Lowell High School in the city.
Meschery was an All-Star in 1963. Moved to small forward the following season and returned to the 4 spot in 1965-66, Meschery remained with the Warriors until he was left exposed to the expansion draft in May 1967.
Selected by the Seattle SuperSonics, Meschery finished his career in the Northwest.
In six seasons in Philadelphia and San Francisco, Meschery averaged 12.9 points and 8.5 rebounds in 30.4 minutes per game, shooting 42.4 percent from the floor and 74.7 percent at the line. He does not appear on any of the franchise’s all-time leaderboards.
He spent four years with the Sonics before retiring after the 1970-71 season.
In September 1971, Meschery was hired to coach the ABA’s Carolina Cougars. He spent one season in that post, going 35-49 and missing the playoffs before resigning in April 1972.
A renowned poet in retirement, Meschery taught high school English in Reno, Nev., until retiring in 2005, and his son, Matthew Meschery, is a former lead vocalist for the band OPM.
