Russell Westbrook was looked upon as a project coming out of UCLA after his sophomore season, a player who would need time to develop.
The Seattle SuperSonics, in their final draft, took Westbrook with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
Relocated shortly after the draft, the
have reaped the rewards from that pick.
Westbrook is a five-time All-Star and a five-time All-NBA selection, as well the MVP of the 2015 and 2016 All-Star games. He was fourth in the MVP voting in 2014-15 and again in 2015-16.
Westbrook led the NBA in scoring in 2014-15, finishing second in steals and fourth in assists. He was also fourth in steals in 2010-11.
In 2015-16, Westbrook was second in the NBA in assists and fifth in steals, averaging 23.5 points, 10.4 assists, 7.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 34.4 minutes per game, shooting .454/.296/.812 in 80 games.
Westbrook was part of the Oklahoma City club that reached the NBA Finals in 2012. In the five-game loss to the Miami Heat, he averaged 27 points, 6.6 assists, 6.4 rebounds and a steal in 42.3 minutes per game, shooting .433/.136/.824.
He played in every game through his first five seasons before being felled by a torn meniscus in the first round of the 2013 playoffs. He missed 36 games in 2013-14 and 15 in 2014-15.
In eight seasons with the Thunder, Westbrook is averaging 21.5 points, 7.6 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 34.0 minutes per game, shooting .435/.302/.818.
Westbrook is 35th in NBA history with an average of 21.5 points per game, 18th with an average of 7.6 assists per game and 39th with an average of 1.7 steals per game.
On Aug. 4, 2016, Westbrook signed an extension of a deal that was set to expire after next season. The extra three years come in at $85.7 million and includes a player option for the final season in 2018-19.
