The Seattle SuperSonics dealt away a franchise icon in February 2003, sending free-agent-to-be Gary Payton and Desmond Mason to the Milwaukee Bucks for a package including Ray Allen, Ronald Murray, Kevin Ollie and a first-round pick in 2003.
Allen turned out to be Seattle’s last big star before the franchise relocated in 2008.
He was a four-time All-Star for the Sonics, earning All-NBA honors in 2004-05, and led the NBA in three-pointers in 2002-03 and 2005-06, finishing fourth in 2004-05.
Allen was also second in free-throw shooting in 2002-03, third in 2005-06 and fourth in 2003-04 and 2006-07; as well as fifth in minutes per game in 2006-07.
On draft night in June 2007, Allen was traded along with the rights to second-round pick Glen Davis to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West, the rights to fifth overall selection Jeff Green and a 2008 second-rounder.
In parts of five seasons in Seattle, Allen averaged 24.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.3 steals in 39.4 minutes per game, shooting .440/.386/.899.
The fifth overall pick out of Connecticut by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1996 NBA Draft, he was traded to the Bucks on draft night and was a three-time All-Star and an All-NBA selection in 2000-01 while there.
With the Celtics, Allen made three more All-Star appearances and was on Boston’s 2008 NBA championship club.
He signed as a free agent with the Miami Heat in July 2012, earning another ring in 2014.
Allen is the NBA’s all-time leader with 2,973 3-pointers, is 19th with 1,300 games, 14th with 46,344 minutes played, 47th with 1,451 steals, 22nd with 24,505 points, 37th with a three-point percentage of .400 and seventh with a free-throw percentage of .894.
Allen has not played the last two seasons, but neither has he formaly announced his retirement.
