The Seattle SuperSonics made a splash in November 1993, acquiring All-Star and former two-time Sixth Man of the Year Detlef Schrempf from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Derrick McKey and Gerald Paddio.
Plugged into the lineup at small forward, Schrempf was a two-time All-Star for the Sonics and an All-NBA pick in 1994-95. He was also second in 3-point shooting in 1994-95.
As part of the 1995-96 Sonics squad that reached the NBA Finals, Schrempf averaged 16.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 39.7 minutes per game in the six-game loss to the
, shooting .443/7-for-18/.875.
In August 1999, Schrempf signed as a free agent with the Portland Trail Blazers after the Sonics renounced his rights.
In six seasons in Seattle, Schrempf averaged 16.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 35.0 minutes per game, shooting .494/.414/.809.
Schrempf, a native of Germany, averaged 15.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as a senior at Washington.
Taken eighth overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1985 NBA Draft, Schrempf broke out after a February 1989 trade to the Pacers, where he was Sixth Man of the Year in both 1990-91 and 1991-92 and an All-Star in 1993.
He announced his retirement in October 2002.
