The Seattle SuperSonics looked to retool their backcourt in June 1995 when they traded Kendall Gill to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for former All-Star Hersey Hawkins and David Wingate.

Hawkins came in and helped the Sonics to the NBA Finals in his first season in Seattle, averaging 13.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals and an assist in 38.3 minutes per game in the six-game loss to the Chicago Bulls, shooting .455/.273/.923.

In four seasons with Seattle, Hawkins averaged 12.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals in 33.2 minutes per game, shooting .455/.386/.877.

An All-American as a senior at Bradley, Hawkins averaged 36.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game that season before he was taken sixth overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1988 NBA Draft.

Hawkins was dealt on draft night to the Philadelphia 76ers and was an All-Star in 1991.

He was traded to Charlotte in September 1993.

After leaving Seattle, Hawkins was waived by the Bulls in September 2000 and returned to Charlotte, retiring after the 2000-01 campaign.

He is 47th in NBA history with 1,226 3-pointers, 27th with 1,622 steals, 50th with a three-point percentage of .395 and 26th with a free-throw percentage of .870.
