Xavier McDaniel was an All-American at Wichita State after a senior season during which he averaged more than 27 points—leading the nation—and almost 15 rebounds per game.
The Seattle SuperSonics chose the forward fourth overall in the 1985 NBA Draft.
McDaniel was a solid performer in Seattle, earning All-Rookie honors in 1985-86 and becoming an All-Star in 1988.
He was part of a blockbuster trade in December 1990 when he was sent to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Eddie Johnson and 1991 and 1994 first-round picks.
In parts of six seasons for the Sonics, McDaniel averaged 20.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals in 33.8 minutes per game, shooting .494/.269/.713.
McDaniel was traded again in October 1991 to the New York Knicks.
He signed with the Boston Celtics as a free agent in September 1992.
Unsigned after the Celtics declined their option in June 1995, McDaniel played the 1995-96 season in Greece before returning to sign with the New Jersey Nets in October 1996.
He was waived by the Nets in January 1998. Two days later, McDaniel returned to them on a pair of 10-day contracts.
Waived before the second tryout contract expired, McDaniel opted to retire.
