Mario Chalmers opted to turn pro after hitting the game-winning shot for Kansas to win a national championship and earn Most Outstanding Player honors in the Final Four.
But he was still on the board until the second round, when he was selected 34th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2008 NBA Draft.
The
acquired his rights on draft night in exchange for two 2009 second-round picks and cash.
Chalmers was an All-Rookie selection in 2008-09, when he was fourth in the NBA in steals. He has also been part of four NBA Finals teams.
He averaged 11.8 points, 3.5 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 28.9 minutes per game, shooting .426/.400/.739 in a six-game loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2011 NBA Finals.
In the 2012 Finals, Chalmers put up 10.4 points, four assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 36.5 minutes per game, shooting .442/.348/6-for-7 in a five-game victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
He averaged 10.6 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 31.6 minutes per game, shooting .388/.406/9-for-13 in a seven-game triumph over the San Antonio Spurs in the 2013 NBA Finals.
In 2014, Chalmers averaged 4.4 points, 2.8 assists, 1.4 rebounds and a steal in 23.1 minutes per game, shooting .333/1-for-7/7-for-9 as the Spurs turned the tables on the Heat in five games.
In November 2015, Chalmers was dealt with James Ennis to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Beno Udrih and Jarnell Stokes.
In parts of eight seasons in Miami, Chalmers averaged 8.8 points, 3.8 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 27.8 minutes per game, shooting .422/.360/.776.
In 2015-16 with the Heat and Memphis, he averaged 10.3 points, 3.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 22.5 minutes a night on .410/.309/.832 shooting, but was waived by the Grizzlies on March 10, 2016, after he was lost for the season to an Achilles injury.
Chalmers became a free agent this summer but remains unsigned for 2016-17.
