By Phil Watson
Sherman Douglas was a two-time All-American at Syracuse, putting up more than 18 points and nearly nine assists per game as a senior, but was still on the board when the Miami Heat selected him in the second round of the 1989 NBA Draft.
He overplayed his 28th overall draft spot, earning All-Rookie honors in 1989-90, but after a lengthy holdout in 1991, he was traded in January 1992 to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Brian Shaw.
In parts of three seasons in Miami, Douglas averaged 16.0 points, 7.9 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 32.3 minutes per game, shooting .499/.143/.687.
Douglas was traded in November 1995 to the Milwaukee Bucks.
He was part of a three-team deal that sent him to the Cleveland Cavaliers in September 1997.
He was traded to the Denver Nuggets in October 1997, but was waived a week later, signing on Halloween 1997 with the New Jersey Nets.
In February 1999, Douglas signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Douglas returned to the Nets as a free agent in October 1999. He retired after the 2000-01 season.
