Miami Heat: 25 Best Players To Play For The Heat
By Phil Watson
Think of Jamal Mashburn as a Valentine’s Day gift, having been acquired from the Dallas Mavericks on that date in February 1997 in exchange for Kurt Thomas, Sasha Danilovic and Martin Muursepp.
He battled injuries during much of his stay with the Miami Heat and was traded in August 2000 with P.J. Brown, Otis Thorpe, Rodney Buford and Tim James to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Anthony Mason, Eddie Jones, Ricky Davis and Dale Ellis.
In parts of four seasons in Miami, Mashburn averaged 15.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.0 steals in 36.7 minutes per game, shooting .436/.365/.771.
Mashburn was the fourth overall pick out of Kentucky by the Mavericks in the 1993 NBA Draft and was an All-Rookie selection in 1993-94.
With the Hornets through their move to New Orleans, he was an All-Star in 2003 and an All-NBA selection in 2002-03 before a knee injury effectively ended his career.
He was traded in February 2005 to the Philadelphia 76ers, but had not played in a game in almost two years.
Mashburn is 23rd in NBA history with an average of 37.3 minutes per game.
