By Phil Watson
The San Antonio Spurs took teenage French point guard Tony Parker with the 28th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft and, unlike some European prospects, Parker came to work right away in the NBA.
He was an All-Rookie pick in 2001-02 and has gone on to become a six-time All-Star and a four-time All-NBA selection. Parker also finished fifth in the MVP voting in 2011-12 and was the 2007 NBA Finals MVP.
He finished third in the NBA in field-goal percentage in 2005-06.
Parker was on the Spurs’ championship teams of 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014 and was part of their 2013 club that lost in the NBA Finals.
In his five trips to the Finals, Parker has averaged 16.5 points, 4.5 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 36.3 minutes per game, shooting .456/.352/.631.
He put up 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 37.8 minutes per game while earning MVP honors in the 2007 Finals, a four-game sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Parker missed time in 2015-16 with hip and ankle injuries, appearing in 72 games and averaging 11.9 points, 5.3 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 27.5 minutes per game on .493/.415/.760 shooting.
In 15 seasons in San Antonio, Parker is averaging 16.6 points, 5.9 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 32.1 minutes per game, shooting .494/.327/.753.
In August 2014, Parker re-signed with the Spurs on a four-year extension that runs through 2017-18. He is 28th in NBA history with 6,349 assists.
