John Beasley, who had played in the National Alliance of Basketball Leagues and the Eastern Professional Basketball League after being drafted but not signed by the NBA, was one of the first to join the Dallas Chaparrals as the ABA geared up for its inaugural season.

Beasley was one of the league’s first stars, earning three All-Star nods—including the MVP award at the 1969 ABA All-Star Game—and was a two-time All-ABA performer for the Chaparrals.

He was third in the ABA in free-throw shooting and rebounding in 1967-68 and finished fourth in field-goal percentage in 1968-69.

In November 1971, the Chaparrals traded Beasley to the Utah Stars for George Peeples, an undisclosed draft pick and cash.

In parts of five seasons with Dallas and Texas, Beasley averaged 17.9 points and 11.0 rebounds in 35.7 minutes per game, shooting .494/.275/.828.

Beasley was a fifth-round pick, 45th overall, out of Texas A&M by the Baltimore Bullets in the 1966 NBA Draft, but never signed with them.

He retired after the 1973-74 season.
