Multi-dimensional Alvin Robertson earned All-America honors as a senior at Arkansas, averaging more than 15 points, six assists and five rebounds per game and the San Antonio Spurs selected the athletic guard with the seventh overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft.
After a season as a reserve, Robertson erupted onto the scene in his second year, earning Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player honors in 1985-86.
A three-time All-Star with the Spurs, he was also an All-NBA selection in 1985-86 and was named All-Defensive four times.
Robertson led the NBA in steals in 1985-86 and 1986-87 and was second in both 1987-88 and 1988-89.
In May 1989, he was traded with Greg Anderson and a second-round pick in 1989 to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Terry Cummings and a second-round selection in 1990.
In five seasons in San Antonio, Robertson averaged 16.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.9 steals in 32.2 minutes per game, shooting .482/.268/.754.
With the Bucks, he was an All-Star in 1991 and a two-time All-Defensive selection, leading the NBA in steals in 1990-91 before he was traded in February 1993 to the Detroit Pistons.
Robertson was swapped to the Denver Nuggets in November 1993, but did not play in 1993-94 due to a back injury.
Waived in October 1994, Robertson sat out all of 1994-95 because of his back and returned to the NBA as a free agent with the Toronto Raptors in October 1995.
Released in July 1996, Robertson played one season in the Continental Basketball Association before retiring in 1997.
He is the NBA’s all-time leader with an average of 2.7 steals per game and is ninth in league history with 2,112 steals.
