While prepping for their first season, the Dallas Chaparrals signed a former NBA draft pick that had been out of the basketball mainstream in Cincy Powell.

Powell was an All-Star for the Chaparrals in 1970 and an All-ABA selection in 1967-68.

and a second-round pick in 1971.

In three seasons in Dallas, Powell averaged 19.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 33.9 minutes per game, shooting .476/.217/.732.

He averaged 17.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game as a senior at the University of Portland and was selected by the St. Louis Hawks in the eighth round, 66th overall, in the 1965 NBA Draft.

Powell never played in the NBA, waived by the Hawks in October 1965.

In August 1972, he was traded to the Utah Stars and was dealt to the Virginia Squires in September 1973.

He retired after the 1974-75 season.
