San Antonio Spurs: 25 Best Players To Play For The Spurs
By Phil Watson
The San Antonio Spurs picked up an All-Star in June 1975 when they acquired Larry Kenon from the New York Nets in exchange for Swen Nater.
Kenon kept on doing his thing, earning an ABA All-Star berth in 1976 and then two more in the NBA for the Spurs after the ABA-NBA merger in 1976.
He was fourth in the ABA in rebounding in 1975-76 and left to sign as a veteran free agent with the
in September 1980. The Spurs received two second-round picks in 1981 as compensation.
In five seasons in San Antonio, Kenon averaged 20.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals in 36.3 minutes per game, shooting .491/1-for-10/.818.
He put up 20.1 points and 16.7 rebounds per game as a junior at Memphis State, leading the Tigers to the NCAA title game in his lone season there after transferring from a JUCO.
Kenon was a third-round pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 1973 NBA Draft, but signed with the Nets after they acquired his rights from the Memphis Tams, who selected Kenon in a January 1973 “special circumstances” draft.
He was an All-Rookie selection in 1973-74 and a two-time All-Star with New York while playing for its 1974 ABA championship club.
Waived in November 1982, he signed in December 1982 with the Golden State Warriors before his contract was sold to the Cleveland Cavaliers in January 1983.
Kenon retired after being waived in March 1983.
