Portland Trail Blazers: 25 Best Players To Play For The Trail Blazers
By Phil Watson
The Portland Trail Blazers got a steal in a draft night trade in June 2006, acquiring the rights to sixth overall pick Brandon Roy from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for the rights to No. 7 overall selection Randy Foye.
The former Washington All-American was the Rookie of the Year in 2006-07 and was a three-time All-Star for the Blazers, earning two All-NBA nods.
But his knees were already starting to deteriorate and he announced his retirement in December 2011, just before the delayed training camps were set to open after the lockout had been resolved.
The Blazers used the amnesty provision to get his contract off the books and waived Roy.
In five seasons in Portland, Roy averaged 1.0 points, 4.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 35.6 minutes per game, shooting .460/.352/.801.
Roy attempted a comeback, signing with the Timberwolves in July 2012.
He appeared in just five games before needing surgery on his troubled right knee and retired after he was waived in May 2013.
