Jim Paxson was the son of a former NBA player of the same name and was a scoring threat as a senior at Dayton, averaging more than 23 points per game.

The Portland Trail Blazers liked his pedigree enough to take him with the 12th overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft.

He established himself as a starter in his second season and was a two-time All-Star and an All-NBA selection in 1983-84 for the Blazers.

Paxson was also fourth in the NBA in free-throw shooting in 1985-86.

He transitioned to a reserve role later in his stay with the team and in February 1988 was traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Jerry Sichting.

In parts of nine seasons in Portland, Paxson averaged 16 points, 3.2 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 29.3 minutes per game, shooting .503/.230/.804.

Paxson retired after being released by the Celtics in October 1990.

He later was the general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers from June 1999-April 2005.
