In August 1999, the Portland Trail Blazers acquired former All-Star Steve Smith along with Ed Gray from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Jim Jackson and Isaiah Rider.

Smith spent a year as a starter before transitioning to a reserve role and gave the Blazers some solid punch in either role before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs in July 2001 in exchange for Steve Kerr, Derek Anderson and a second-round pick in 2003.

In two seasons in Portland, Smith averaged 14.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 32.1 minutes per game, shooting .461/.369/.871.

A two-time All-American at Michigan State, both as a junior and a senior, Smith averaged 25.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in his final season and was the fifth overall pick by the Miami Heat in the 1991 NBA Draft.

He was an All-Rookie performer in 1991-92.

Traded to the Hawks in November 1994, Smith was an All-Star in 1998.

With San Antonio, he led the NBA in 3-point shooting in 2001-02 and was part of the Spurs’ 2003 title team.

Smith signed with the New Orleans Hornets as a free agent in October 2003.

In September 2004, he signed with the Charlotte Bobcats and in February 2005 was traded back to the Heat, retiring in September 2005.
