Atlanta Hawks: 25 Best Players To Play For The Hawks
By Phil Watson
Dan Roundfield was an unproven commodity when the Atlanta Hawks signed him as a veteran free agent in June 1978, giving up a 1979 first-round pick to the Indiana Pacers as compensation for signing the power forward.
He proved himself over and over for the Hawks.
Roundfield was a three-time All-Star, a five-time All-Defensive selection and was an All-NBA pick in 1979-80, the year he finished fifth in the MVP voting.
In June 1984, he was traded to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Antoine Carr, Cliff Levingston and second-round picks in 1986 and 1987.
In six seasons in Atlanta, Roundfield averaged 17.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.0 steals in 34.2 minutes per game, shooting .490/.125/.738.
Roundfield averaged 19.0 points and 11.7 rebounds per game as a senior at Central Michigan and was taken in the second round, 28th overall, by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1975 NBA Draft
He instead signed with the ABA’s Pacers, moving with them to the NBA in 1976.
In June 1985, he was traded to the Washington Bullets and retired from the NBA in June 1987, although he played one more season in Italy.
He died Aug. 6, 2012, in Aruba when he drowned while helping his wife to safety. He was 59 years old.
