It was early in the 1994-95 season—November 1994—when the Atlanta Hawks acquired Steve Smith, Grant Long and a second-round pick in 1996 from the Miami Heat in exchange for Kevin Willis and a first-round selection in 1996.

Smith took well to the change.

In parts of five seasons in Atlanta, Smith averaged 18.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 36.7 minutes per game, shooting .430/.337/.844.

A two-time All-American at Michigan State, Smith put up 25.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game as a senior.

Smith was the fifth overall pick by the Heat in the 1991 NBA Draft and was an All-Rookie selection in 1991-92.

He was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in July 2001, leading the NBA in 3-point percentage in 2001-02 and earning a championship ring in 2003.

Smith signed with the New Orleans Hornets in October 2003 and signed with the Charlotte Bobcats in September 2004.

In February 2005, he was dealt back to Miami and retired in September 2005.
