Charlotte Hornets: 25 Best Players To Play For The Hornets
By Phil Watson
Johnny Newman had turned himself into a solid NBA starter and the Charlotte Hornets were banking on that when they signed the unrestricted free agent in July 1990.
He plugged into the small forward spot upon his arrival with the Hornets and helped the team to its first playoff berth in 1993 before being traded to the New Jersey Nets in December 1993 for Rumeal Robinson.
In parts of four seasons in Charlotte, Newman averaged 14.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals in 27.7 minutes per game, shooting .488/.309/.797.
A second-round pick out of Richmond by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1986 NBA Draft, Newman’s career blossomed after he was waived in November 1987 and signed with the New York Knicks a week later.
His road took many turns after he left the Hornets. In October 1994, Newman signed with the Milwaukee Bucks and was traded in June 1997 to the Denver Nuggets.
He returned to Cleveland as a free agent in January 1999 and was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in August 1999.
A month later, he was swapped again, this time back to the Nets.
In July 2001, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns, but was waived in September 2001.
In November 2001, he signed with the Dallas Mavericks.
After going unsigned after the 2001-02 season, Newman played a year in Greece before retiring in 2003.
He is 46th in NBA history with 1,159 games.
