The Charlotte Hornets didn’t win the draft lottery in 1992 and their consolation prize for picking second overall was three-time All-American Alonzo Mourning of Georgetown, who averaged more than 21 points and nearly 11 rebounds a game as a senior.
An All-Rookie selection in 1992-93, Mourning was a two-time All-Star for the Hornets. He was fourth in the NBA in blocks in 1992-93 and 1993-94 and fifth in 1994-95.
and a first-round pick in 1996.
In three seasons in Charlotte, Mourning averaged 21.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 1.3 assists in 35.4 minutes per game, shooting .512/.282/.768.
He was a five-time All-Star, two-time Defensive Player of the Year, two-time All-NBA selection and two-time All-Defensive pick for the Heat, leading the NBA in blocks in both 1998-99 and 1999-2000.
In July 2003, Mourning signed as a free agent with the New Jersey Nets and was traded to the Toronto Raptors in December 2004.
He refused to report to Toronto and was waived in February 2005, rejoining the Heat in March of that year.
He was part of Miami’s championship team in 2006 and retired in January 2009 after he was unable to come back from a serious knee injury.
Kidney ailments cost him most of the 2000-01 and 2003-04 seasons and all of the 2002-03 campaign.
Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014, Mourning is 11th in NBA history with 2,356 blocked shots, 41st with a field-goal percentage of .527 and sixth with an average of 2.8 blocks per game.
