By Phil Watson
The Charlotte Bobcats took a shot on a small guard when they took Texas All-American D.J. Augustin with the ninth overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
As a sophomore, he had averaged more than 19 points and almost six assists a game with the Longhorns.
He was an All-Rookie pick in 2008-09 as a reserve and finished fourth in the NBA in free-throw shooting in 2010-11, his first season as a starter for the Bobcats.
Augustin left to sign as a free agent with the Indiana Pacers in July 2012.
In four seasons in Charlotte, he averaged 10.9 points, 4.4 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 26.8 minutes per game, shooting .407/.374/.876.
He signed as a free agent with the Toronto Raptors in July 2013, but was waived in December, signing four days later with the Chicago Bulls.
In July 2014, Augustin signed with the Detroit Pistons and in February 2015, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a three-team deal.
2015-16 was another split season for Augustin, who was traded to the Denver Nuggets on Feb. 18, 2016, and averaged 7.5 points and 3.2 assists in 19.0 minutes per game between Oklahoma City and Denver, shooting .423/.405/.805.
He was on the move again come July 7, 2016, signing a four-year, $29 million free-agent contract with the Orlando Magic that runs through 2019-20.
Augustin is 29th in NBA history with a free-throw percentage of .867.
