The Charlotte Hornets made a blockbuster deal in March 1999 when they acquired Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Glen Rice, J.R. Reid and B.J. Armstrong.

In Campbell, they got a veteran big who could play center or power forward and he was a starter at both positions for the Hornets until leaving with the club for New Orleans after the 2001-02 season.

In parts of four seasons in Charlotte, Campbell averaged 13.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.5 assists in 30.8 minutes per game, shooting .460/0-for-15/.720.

Campbell put up 16.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as a senior at Clemson and was the 27th overall pick by the Lakers in the 1990 NBA Draft.

Campbell was dealt to the Seattle SuperSonics in February 2003 and signed with the Detroit Pistons as a free agent in July 2003.

He was on the Pistons’ championship squad in 2004 before being traded in January 2005 to the Utah Jazz, who waived him five days later.

He was claimed off waivers by the New Jersey Nets and waived again in March 2005. Three days later, he re-signed with Detroit before retiring at the end of the season.

Campbell is 31st in NBA history with 1,602 blocked shots.
