Charlotte Hornets: 25 Best Players To Play For The Hornets
By Phil Watson
When a team makes its expansion draft picks, it really isn’t looking for a player to become a franchise icon.
But when the Charlotte Hornets took Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dell Curry with their first pick in the 1988 expansion draft, that’s what they got.
Curry was the Sixth Man of the Year in 1993-94, when he finished third in the NBA in 3-pointers, and provided the Hornets with punch off the bench for their first 10 years.
After the NBA lockout ended in January 1999, an era ended when Curry signed as a free agent with the Milwaukee Bucks.
In 10 seasons in Charlotte, Curry averaged 14.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.1 steals in 25.1 minutes per game, shooting .462/.405/.852.
He was an All-American as a senior at Virginia Tech, averaging 24.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
The 15th overall pick by the Utah Jazz in the 1986 NBA Draft, Curry was traded to the Cavaliers in October 1987.
After his stint in Charlotte, Curry led the NBA in three-point shooting for the Bucks in 1998-99.
He later signed as a free agent with the Toronto Raptors in August 1999 and retired after the 2001-02 season.
He is 44th in NBA history with 1,245 3-pointers and 31st with a 3-point percentage of .402.
