Charlotte Hornets: 25 Best Players To Play For The Hornets
By Phil Watson
The Charlotte Hornets went small with their third selection in the 1988 expansion draft, taking Washington Bullets guard Muggsy Bogues, the shortest player in NBA history at just 5-foot-3.
Bogues was both a starter and a reserve for the Hornets and was with them through their foundation years and their first playoff appearances.
Bogues was fifth in the NBA in free-throw shooting in 1994-95 and was a top assist man, finishing second in the league in 1993-94, fourth in both 1989-90 and 1991-92 and fifth in 1992-93 and 1994-95.
In November 1997, Bogues’ stay with the Hornets ended when he was traded with Tony Delk to the Golden State Warriors for B.J. Armstrong.
In parts of 10 seasons in Charlotte, Bogues averaged 8.8 points, 8.8 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 31.3 minutes per game, shooting .466/.282/.818.
After a solid senior season at Wake Forest, during which he averaged 14.8 points and 9.5 assists per game, Bogues was the 12th overall pick by the Bullets in the 1987 NBA Draft.
After departing Charlotte, he signed with the Toronto Raptors as a free agent in September 1999, was traded to the New York Knicks in February 2001 and was part of a three-team deal that sent him to the Dallas Mavericks in August 2001.
Waived by the Mavericks before the start of the 2001-02 season, Bogues opted to retire.
He is 19th in NBA history with 6,726 assists and an average of 7.6 assists per game.
