By Phil Watson
The Charlotte Hornets added a former All-Star when they acquired Hersey Hawkins in September 1993 from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Dana Barros, Sidney Green, Greg Graham and a first-round pick in 1994.
With the Hornets, Hawkins started every game for two seasons before he was swapped with David Wingate to the Seattle SuperSonics in exchange for Kendall Gill.
Hawkins returned to Charlotte as a free agent in September 2000, playing a final season as a reserve before retiring in 2001.
In three seasons in Charlotte, Hawkins averaged 11.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals in 27.2 minutes per game, shooting .466/.390/.864.
He was the Associated Press Player of the Year and an All-American as a senior at Bradley, scoring a ridiculous 36.3 points per game to go with 7.8 rebounds a night.
He was taken sixth overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1988 NBA Draft and traded to the 76ers on draft night.
Hawkins was first team All-Rookie in 1988-89, finishing fourth in three-point shooting, and was named an All-Star in 1991.
With Seattle, he played in the 1996 NBA Finals loss and was fifth in the NBA in free-throw shooting in 1998-99.
In August 1999, he was traded to the Chicago Bulls, who waived him in September 2000.
Hawkins is 47th in NBA history with 1,226 3-pointers, 27th with 1,622 steals, 50th with a 3-point percentage of .395 and 26th with a free-throw percentage of .870.
