Charlotte Hornets: 25 Best Players To Play For The Hornets
By Phil Watson
Marvin Williams has always been viewed as something as a disappointment, due in large part to his draft position.
But he’s become a solid pro and the Charlotte Hornets have used Williams as a stretch-4 type player since signing him to a two-year contract in July 2014.
Williams split his time between the starting lineup and the bench in his first year in Charlotte, but started all 81 games he played for the Hornets in 2015-16.
He averaged 11.7 points (his first double-figure average in four seasons), 6.4 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 28.9 minutes in 2015-16, shooting .452/.402/.833.
Williams did not have a good postseason, however, hitting a shooting slump that saw him hit just 27.5 percent of his attempts in a seven-game loss to the Miami Heat.
In two seasons in Charlotte, Williams is averaging 9.6 points and 5.7 rebounds in 27.5 minutes per game on .441/.384/.788 shooting.
He hit the NBA radar as a freshman at North Carolina, turning pro after averaging 11.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game as a reserve for a national championship squad.
The Atlanta Hawks took Williams with the second overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.
He was a second team All-Rookie selection in 2005-06.
Williams dealt with knee and hip injuries, as well as a broken hand, during his time with the Hawks and in July 2012, he was traded to the Utah Jazz.
Slowed by a concussion and more knee problems, Williams left Salt Lake City after two seasons to sign with Charlotte in July 2014.
He re-signed with the Hornets on July 10, 2016, inking a four-year, $54.5 million deal that includes a player option for the 2019-20 season.
